Ø  Murshidabad district is divided into two nearly equal portions by the Bhagirathi, the ancient channel of the Ganges.
Ø  The tract to the west, known as the Rarh, consists of hard clay and nodular limestone.
Ø  The Bagri or eastern half belongs to alluvial plains of eastern Bengal.
Ø  Murshidabad was named after its founder, Nawab Murshid Quli Khan.
Ø  Murshid is an Arabic term for a teacher or guide with integrity, sensibility, and maturity. The suffix -abad is derived from the Persian word abad, which referred to a cultivated place.
Ø  On 17 August 1947 the final boundary adjustment of the Radcliffe Commission transferred Murshidabad to the Dominion of India
Ø  The District of Murshidabad has an area of 5,550 square kilometres (2,140 sq mi)
Ø  The population of the district is 7.103 million (according to 2011 census)
Ø  Murshidabad ranks 9th in India in terms of population.
Ø  Murshidabad has a sex ratio of 957 females for 1000 every males and a literacy rate of 67.53%
Ø  Headquarter of the district is Berhampore
Ø  There are five sub-divisions: 1. Berhampore, 2. Lalbagh, 3. Kandi, 4. Jangipur, 5. Domkal
Ø  There are 26 police stations, 26 development blocks, 7 municipalities, 254 gram panchayats and 1937 villages in this district.
Ø  The district is now divided into 22 assembly constituencies.
Ø  In total there are 29 urban units: 7 municipalities and 22 census towns.
Ø  Three Lok Sabha constituencies are Berhampore, Murshidabad and Jangipur
Ø  Some important rivers of Murshidabad are the Bhagirathi, Jalangi, Mayurakshi and Dwaraka.
Ø  Name of a dam is Farakka barrage
Ø  Commonly seen trees are Neem, Mango, Jackfruit.
Ø  Most of the people depend on agriculture for their livelihood.
Ø  Major industries are Ivory and Silk, Indian Cork (Shola), Bell-metal and brass works, Silk and Sari.
Ø  Heavy Industries: The District is having the largest Power Plant at Sagardighi 12 km from Raghunathganj, it also having a Central power plant at Farraka NTPC Generating 1600MW power.A Hydropower project is upcoming in the district.The District is the largest manufacturer of Bidi and many women from the district are involved in manufacturing Bidi.

Ø  The number of M.P. Schools is 264.
Ø  The number of H.S. Schools is 123.
Ø  The number of colleges is 26.
Ø  The number of polytechnic colleges is 2.
Ø  The number of technical colleges is 5.
Ø  The number of engineering colleges is 6.
Ø  The number of medical college is one.
Ø  Tourist spots: The Hazarduari Palace, Wasef Manzil, Kiriteswari Temple(One of the Sati Piths).
