200th birthday ceremony of Vidyasagar in our school
-- By .............
Berhampore, 27th Sep. (‘19): Our school observed 200th birthday ceremony of Vidyasagar with a great respect.
One month before the ceremony a meeting was held and a notice was issued. We observed the birthday ceremony of Vidyasagar for one week from 20th September to 26th September, 2019 throughout many events and cultural programmes. On the first day a ‘Sit and Draw’ competition was organised based on various contributions of Vidyasagar and his life. The next day a quiz competition on Vidyasagar was held. Next three days we observed through debate competition, free distribution of books, and inauguration of a statue of Vidyasagar. Last two days were observed through a Seminar, a rally and a cultural programme. The Vice Chancellor of Vidyasagar University presided over the seminar. We can never forget the contribution of the father of Bengali Language and great social reformer, Vidyasagar. Throughout these events we come to know a lot about him.

Amtala, 23rd Sep. (2018): Fifteen people were feared to be dead when a boat capsized in the Kansabati River near Amtala Ghat in Midnapore today about 3 p.m.
A country boat was crossing the Kansabati River as usual day with a number of passengers towards Amtala Ghat. But near the Ghat the boat capsized with all the passengers. As a result all the passengers fell into the river. Some of the passengers swam ashore. But many more drowned. Among them five dead bodies were recovered so far by the locals. About fifteen people were feared to be dead. Local people and one of the survivals complained, “Every day the boat carries passengers beyond the capacity and there is none to look into this matter.” Ananto Ghosh, another survival, said to us, “They have no security measures like life-jackets in the boat whatsoever. We risk our lives daily.” Police arrived at the spot and enraged/agitated mob was dispersed.

Sub.:- Increasing antisocial activities in our locality

Sir,
On behalf of our locality, I, the undersigned, a bona fide citizen of this country beg to draw your attention to the increasing antisocial activities in our locality. I dwell at Purbachal in Khagra area. Day by day this area is becoming a rendezvous (রঁদেভু, আড্ডার জায়গা) for the antisocial. Snatching, burglary, threatening are frequent in this area. Even sometimes cases of murders also occur. Hooligans roam in the whole area on their bike. Maidens as well as women fear to go outside, day in day out, for growing cases of eve-teasing. Two days ago in our neighbourhood, some rogues broke into the house and decamped with lakhs of rupees. Police department turn a deaf ear to our repeated appeals. Before Puja and festivals they enforce us and others for a big amount of subscription.
Under this above circumstances, I request the favour of your kindly looking into the matter and taking necessary steps to make it a proper society.

A 15 year-old girl stopped her marriage single-handedly
-      Staff Reporter
Plassey, 5th August: A 15 year-old girl stopped her marriage single-handedly and dreamt of an independent life.
Few days ago  Meher Unnisha (name changed) from a village near Plassey, just cleared her eighth class, came back from school. She was shocked to know that her marriage had been fixed and the ceremony was due in the next five days. She showed discontent and for this she was beaten up by her father. But she didn’t give up and stood by her thoughts to study and get a good job. Marriage at such young age was not on her mind. When nothing seemed to work, she managed to send a text message to a local NGO. After seeing the message, NGO came to her rescue informing the local police station. When questioned, Meher clearly stood for what she believed in. Police arrested her parents and some other relatives and sent her to an NGO-run Home. It is clear that had she not gone against her family and showed enough courage to speak the truth out loud, no organization would have been able to help her.

Editorial letter : Inclusion of Pass-fail system in the school curriculum

To
The Editor,
The Telegraph,

Sub.: Inclusion of Pass-fail system in the school curriculum
Sir,
Please allow me a single column in your esteemed daily to express my views on the inclusion of pass-fail system in the school curriculum.
Evaluation is the most vital part in the school-curriculum. Through evaluation we can know how much a learner has learnt throughout the whole year. We can also know if he is progressing or not. But some years ago educationists and Government abolished this system to lessen the pressure from the shoulders of the students. And in doing so, the whole education system has got into trouble as the learners give no essence to their studies. They know that they will be progressed to the next class. But this year, Government has decided to bring back the former system. This will help a proper evaluation of the students. They also give essence to pass the examination and they can better their future. So I think this is a good initiative for the betterment of the learners. So it is a good decision.
Under this above circumstances, I appeal to the Government to take this kind of initiative to better the future of the children of our state.
