MODEL ACTIVITY TASKS ENGLISH CLASS XI

1. Contrast the characters of Sir Mohan Lal and his wife in the story 'Karma'?

Ans. Sir Mohan and Lachmi are husband-wife but every bit of thing is contrasting – from their appearance to their habits. They are both in middle-ages but Sir Mohan looks like a handsome old chap in foreign covering whereas Lachmi is fat, fair and in native covering. Sir Mohan is educated and well-mannered and dislikes native culture. But Lachmi sticks herself to her roots and being illiterate she has no care for mannerism. Mohan Lal loves to hover through the fairyland alienating himself from his native culture. But Lachmi honours the relationship and culture. Sir Mohan loves conversation but Lachmi loves to gossip. Their ultimate Karma is also contrasting as Mohan faces a downfall in the hands of English but Lachmi is able to travel comfortably.

2. "... the two hearts beating each to each!" Whose hearts are referred here? How do the two hearts meet?

Ans. i) The hearts of two lovers are referred here.

ii) In the poem, “Meeting at Night”, the lover undertakes a long journey to meet his beloved by sailing across the grey sea. After landing on the warm sea scented beach, he walks a mile on the sea beach and crosses three fields to reach his destination, a farm house where his ladylove lives. There after tapping at the window-pane, he receives his beloved’s signal of lighting match. In this way the lover, after overcoming all the obstacles, finally meets his beloved and ultimately two hearts unit.

4. Write a paragraph within 150 words on the Importance of Discipline in life.

Ans.            Importance of Discipline in Life

At every walk of life there are certain rules arid regulations to ensure a hassle-free and peaceful atmosphere. Abiding by these rules and regulations is called discipline. The value of discipline is immense but most people around us hardly maintain discipline in their life. Home is the very place where a child should learn the first lesson of discipline. Parents and other elders of the family should keep it in mind that their disciplined life alone can inject a true sense of discipline into the mind of the child. After home school plays a crucial role in inculcating discipline in the boys and girls. If teachers themselves go by discipline, it is easier for them to encourage their students to be disciplined. It is seen that disciplined students stay much ahead of the undisciplined lot not only in the race of academic success but also in the spheres of future career and social standing. If most people maintain discipline in their life, there will prevail peace and happiness in their families as well as in the larger society. We notice that undisciplined people create disturbances and destroy peace in their families and the society. Thus discipline plays a key role behind success.

1. "In any case, we couldn't have kept a criminal like him in the house." Who is the speaker? Whom does "criminal" refer to? What message is conveyed by this sentence in the story?

Ans. i) Mr. Sivasanker is the speaker.

ii) “Criminal” refers to Sidda.

iii) The story “Leela’s Friend” brings forth the class-conflict between the high and low of the society. Sidda becomes the victim of that conflict. Poverty leaves a permanent wound to Sidda’s life. Though he tries to overcome his dark past and is proved guiltless at the end of the story, he is neither allowed to continue his job nor provided with an apology. The socalled society remains indifferent to his sorrows and sufferings. This is not a case to Sidda only, but its roots lie in the every sphere of the society making it worse. This message is conveyed through this sentence.

2. In the poem “Upon Westminster Bridge” how does Wordsworth describe the different sights seen in early morning?

Ans. William Wordsworth established an alluring poem ‘Composed Upon Westminster Bridge’ using successful ways of portraying early morning tranquility in a dynamic city. The poet conveys the beauty of man-made things when viewed in the correct way. The poem begins with a rather shocking statement when the poet is not speaking of Nature, but of the city. The city of London wears the beauty of the morning just like a garment. Complete silence prevails everywhere. All the man-made things look very bright and glittering in the smokeless air of the morning. The sun shines more beautifully in its morning grandeur over valleys, rocks and hills. The river Thames flows on majestically while the busy city of England seems to be asleep.

3. Write the significance of the title in The Comedy of Errors.

Ans. i) Much of The Comedy of Errors is about mistaken identity and the search for true identity. This theme of identity goes hand in hand with the concept of the differences in appearance and reality. Nearly all of the comedic mistakes that drive the plot of The Comedy of Errors result from the confusion and mistaken identities of Antipholus and Dromio of Ephesus, and Antipholus and Dromio of Syracuse. Additionally, the fact that these two sets of twins have the same names creates even more confusion between who is really who. Each one is constantly mixed up with his twin because they have the same physical appearance. When the two sets of twins show up in Ephesus, what appears to be true is usually false and the mistaken identities produce a comedy of errors –hence the title is apt.

 4. Why was the adversity of the Forest of Arden preferred to the courtiers' life?

Ans.  At the beginning of the play we find that the atmosphere of the court and the city is filled with jealousies, rivalries and antagonisms. But the atmosphere of the Forest of Arden is entirely different. It is pure, peaceful and idle. Moreover the beauty of nature and playful beasts of the jungles give them pleasure. In the forest Duke Senior realizes that the uses of adversity are sweet. He as well as other courtiers finds the life of the forest to be more acceptable than the life of the court.
