The Eyes Have It: Model Questions & Answers (Broad questions) for H.S. Students

Set – 3

1. “Yes this the best time.” – From where are the above lines quoted? What is the place spoken about in this line? What time of the year is it? Why is it the best time to the narrator?

Ans. The above lines are quoted from ‘The Eyes Have It.’

The place spoken about in this line is Mussoorie.

It is October month of the year.

October is the best time to visit Mussoorie for many reasons. The narrator feels that October is the best time in the hills because by October most of the tourists have gone and the roads are very quiet. The hills are covered with wild Dahlias. The sun is warm and cosy and at night, one can sit by the fire sipping brandy. It is quiet and very beautiful all around. So the month of October is exquisite to eyes as well as enjoyable for the serenity of the place.

Set-4

1. "She had beautiful eyes, but they were of no use to her." -- Whose eyes are mentioned here? Why were they useless? What is the irony here?

Ans. The eyes of the girl who had been the narrator’s co-passenger up to Saharanpur are mentioned here.

They were useless to her because the eyes are meant for seeing and enjoying the beauty of everything but the girl was actually blind.

The author uses irony of situation here in this line. Throughout the whole story the narrator said about his blindness and tried to hide it from others – especially from the girl, boarded from Rohana station. The narrator was curious about the girl and her beauty and when the girl detrained, the narrator was satisfied that he could conceal his blindness. But the new co-passenger told him that the girl could not see i.e. she was blind also. So the irony in this line lies in the fact that actually the girl deceived the narrator.

Set-5

1. "I wondered if my words had touched her or whether she thought me a romantic fool." -- Who is the speaker? Why did the speaker feel that he might be thought a "romantic fool"?

Ans. The narrator is the speaker.

In the short story 'The Eyes Have It', during the narrator's conversation with the girl regarding the beauty of the hills in October, the girl expressed her desire to visit the hills. The narrator became nostalgic and gave a vivid and romantic description of the hills during the month of October. After listening to the narrator's description of the hills the girl became silent. This made the narrator wonder whether his words had touched her or if she thought him to be a romantic fool.
