Banquo's Prophecies

3. Act II: Descent into Blood
The Plan of Murder
Act 2Overwhelmed by Lady Macbeth’s cold promptings and his own unchecked ambition, Macbeth plots to murder the visiting sovereign, King Duncan, inside Inverness Castle.
"Is this a dagger which I see before me, the handle toward my hand? Come, let me clutch thee."
— Macbeth, Act 2, Scene 1The Execution: Despite severe hesitation (the legendary "Dagger Scene" hallucination), Macbeth stabs Duncan in his sleep. Lady Macbeth smears blood on the sleeping chambers' guards to frame them for the regicide.
4. Act III: The Paranoid Sovereign
Scattering Sovereigns & Ghostly Visits
Act 3Once the king’s corpse is found, a split occurs within the royal household due to immediate safety concerns:
- Malcolm (Eldest Prince): Flees to safety in England.
- Donalbain (Youngest Prince): Escapes to Ireland.
- The Power Vacuum: With the legitimate heirs suspected of treason and scattered, Macbeth is crowned King.
The Elimination of Banquo
Haunted by the prophecy that Banquo's heirs would rule, Macbeth arranges a shadowy forest ambush:
- Banquo is murdered on the road.
- His son, Fleance, escapes into the dark night.
The Haunted Dinner: At a state banquet, the specter of Banquo sits in Macbeth's throne. Only the crazed King can perceive the ghostly guest, prompting a public mental collapse that damages his rule.
5. Act IV: Deceptive Assurances
The Three Apparitions
Act 4Desperate to secure his crown, Macbeth seeks out the witches once again. They summon three supernatural apparitions, delivering warnings wrapped in tricky half-truths:
1. The Armed Head
Prophecy: "Beware Macduff! Beware the Thane of Fife."
2. The Bloody Child
Prophecy: "None of woman born shall harm Macbeth." (Creating a false belief of complete invulnerability).
3. The Crowned Child holding a Tree
Prophecy: "Macbeth shall never vanquish'd be until Great Birnam Wood to high Dunsinane Hill shall come against him."
6. Act V: Retribution & Restoration
The Prophecies Unravel
Act 5The tragedy reaches its peak as Macbeth’s artificial confidence collapses under the weight of fate and actions:
- Lady Macbeth's Fall: Driven mad by the memory of Duncan's murder ("Out, damned spot!"), she sleepwalks, breaks down, and takes her own life.
- Birnam Wood Moves: The English-Scottish alliance army under Malcolm approaches Dunsinane. To mask their advance numbers, soldiers carry branches cut from Birnam Wood.
- The Birth Riddle Revealed: Macbeth meets Macduff in single combat. Boasting of his invulnerability, Macbeth is stunned when Macduff reveals he was "untimely ripped" from his mother’s womb (a Caesarean birth), fulfilling the Bloody Child’s prophecy.
"Lay on, Macduff, and damn'd be him that first cries, 'Hold, enough!'"
— Macbeth, Act 5, Scene 8Resolution: Macduff kills and beheads the tyrant. Order is restored as Malcolm is rightfully crowned King of Scotland at Scone, bringing peace back to the kingdom.
